What a temporary number actually is
It is a real mobile line, rented to you for a single verification. When a site asks for a phone number, you paste the rented one instead of your own. The one-time code the site sends lands on this screen, usually within a few seconds, and you copy it across. About twenty minutes later the number retires and is no longer yours.
Nothing is installed and no SIM changes hands. Each number is used once, for one service, so the sign-up you completed cannot be tied back to the number you actually carry around. If you need a second account somewhere later, you rent a second number rather than reusing the first.

Most sit in the low tens of cents; heavily guarded services in high-demand countries cost more, because the supply of lines that still work with them is smaller. You top a wallet up once and each number draws a small one-off charge from that balance, so there is no subscription running in the background and nothing to cancel.
Sometimes a code does not arrive. A recycled range may be blocked by the service, or the sender simply drops the message. When that happens the number expires and the full price returns to your wallet automatically — you do not open a ticket and you do not wait on a reply.
