One number, one account
Discord binds a phone number to an account, and it will refuse a number already attached to a different one. Rented numbers pass through many hands, so if Discord says the number is already in use, that is what happened — cancel it, take another, and the charge is refunded in full.
This is also why it is worth avoiding the cheapest ranges: high recycling means a much higher chance the number is already spoken for.
Do not use SMS as your only second factor
If you are verifying to satisfy a server requirement, you are done once the code is accepted. If you are setting up two-factor authentication, use an authenticator app instead — SMS 2FA on a number you no longer control locks you out of your own account the moment Discord asks for a code again.
Set up an authenticator app first, then add the phone verification if a server still needs it.

Discord verification questions
Does Discord accept temporary numbers?
Yes, as long as the number is not already attached to another Discord account and the range is one Discord will deliver to. Mid-priced countries with good stock work most consistently.
Discord says my number is already registered — why?
A previous renter attached it to their account. Cancel the activation for a full refund and buy another number, ideally in a slightly more expensive country where recycling is lower.
How long do I have to enter the code?
The number stays yours for about 20 minutes, which is longer than any verification screen keeps its own timer open. If the code has not arrived by the time the number expires, the charge is returned to your wallet automatically.
Do I pay if no code arrives?
No. You are charged when a code is delivered. If the SMS never lands before the number expires, or you cancel the number after the two-minute grace period because the service rejected it, the full amount goes straight back to your wallet balance.
How do I pay for numbers?
